Breeding against mycorrhizal symbiosis: Modern cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) varieties perform more poorly than older varieties except at very high phosphorus supply levels

چکیده

Cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) is an important fiber cash crop, but its root traits, including mycorrhizal related to phosphorus (P) acquisition have been poorly understood. Eight cotton varieties bred in northwestern China that were released between 1950 and 2013 grown pots with or without one arbuscular fungal (AMF) species (Funneliformis mosseae) at three P supply levels (0, 50 300 mg as KH2PO4 kg-1). Eleven traits measured calculated after seven weeks of growth. More recent accessions had smaller diameters, acquired less obtained biomass, indicating (inadvertent) varietal selection for thinner roots provided cortical space AMF, which then increased the need high fertilizer. At two lower levels, plants more produced biomass than non-mycorrhizal (3.2 vs. 0.9 plant-1; 1.8 g plant-1 P0; 14.5 1.7 4.7 1.6 plant-1at P50). highest level, (18.8 13.4 plant-1), there was no difference (6.2 6.3 plant-1). intermediate diameter significantly positively correlated shoot concentration content plants. Our study supports importance outsourcing model economics framework. Inadvertent last decades, resulting a benefit from has caused productivity moderate (when mycorrhizal, average older 5.0 plant-1vs. newer 4.4 rethink breeding efforts order achieve yields very input. One feasible way solve problem inadvertent be aware trade-offs do-it-yourself strategy towards AMF include both morphological when varieties.

Infraspecific DNA methylation polymorphism in cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.).

Cytosine methylation is important in the epigenetic regulation of gene expression and development in plants and has been implicated in silencing duplicate genes after polyploid formation in several plant groups. Relatively little information exists, however, on levels and patterns of methylation polymorphism (MP) at homologous loci within species. Here we explored the levels and patterns of met...

A high-efficiency CRISPR/Cas9 system for targeted mutagenesis in Cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.)

The complex allotetraploid genome is one of major challenges in cotton for repressing gene expression. Developing site-specific DNA mutation is the long-term dream for cotton breeding scientists. The clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats/CRISPR-associated protein 9 (CRISPR/Cas9) system is emerging as a robust biotechnology for targeted-DNA mutation. In this study, two sgRNAs...

Effect of Nitrogen on Seed Cotton Yield and Fiber Qualities of Cotton (gossypium Hirsutum L.) Cultivars

Seed cotton yield and fiber qualities may be significantly altered by a number of agronomic practices. The present study investigates the effect of nitrogen levels on cotton cultivar's seed cotton yield and fiber quality traits. Three cotton cultivars (NIAB-111, CIM496 and FH901) were tested against four nitrogen levels (0, 60, 120 and 180 kg ha) to check reliability, the highest yielding and g...

QTL analysis for early-maturing traits in cotton using two upland cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) crosses

Making use of the markers linked closely to QTL for early-maturing traits for MAS (Marker-assisted selection) is an effective method for the simultaneous improvement of early maturity and other properties in cotton. In this study, two F2 populations and their F2:3 families were generated from the two upland cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) crosses, Baimian2 × TM-1 and Baimian2 × CIR12. QTL for ea...
